Escape To VR says Balboa Park has 17 museums, which is a decent answer to a gray forecast. Rain is rare in San Diego, and when it comes, most of these ideas are indoors: climbing walls, an ice rink, go-karts, aquariums. In light rain a zoo visit can still work if you don't mind getting damp. Prices come from the sources, one of them dated 2023, so check before you go. The list leaves out beach days and anything that needs a clear sky.
Why these items are on the list
- Explore Balboa Park museums. Escape To VR counts 17 museums in the park, including Air & Space, Natural History and Fleet Science Center.
- San Diego Museum of Art. Art museum option for a gallery day.
- Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. Escape To VR points to marine life exhibits, tide pools and interactive displays, at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
- Legoland indoor attractions. Escape To VR lists indoor rides, Miniland and the Sea Life Aquarium, and calls it great for younger kids.
- Climb at Mesa Rim. Fox 5 says walls suit beginners and regulars, with locations in Mission Valley, San Marcos and Mira Mesa.
- Race go-karts at K1 Speed. Fox 5 describes a quarter-mile indoor track, karts near 45 mph, in downtown San Diego and Carlsbad.
- Skate at UTC ICE. Fox 5 listed $25 for admission and rentals in 2023, $5 less online 24 hours ahead.
- Try indoor skydiving at iFLY. Vertical wind tunnel, no plane. Fox 5 says flyers ages 3 and up; Oceanside and San Diego locations.
- Bowl a few frames. Good when rain rules out a hike or a swim. Some centers have cosmic bowling and arcades.
- Play VR games in Carlsbad. Escape To VR says sessions run 30 to 60 minutes, $30 to $35 a person, ages 8 and up.
- Catch a show at Lamb's Players. A rainy-day roundup lists this live theater on Orange Avenue in Coronado.
- Curl up at DG Wills Books. A quiet option for reading out the weather, named in a rainy day roundup.
- Tour a craft brewery. San Diego has plenty. Arrange a designated driver or a rideshare.
- Walk the San Diego Zoo. Also in Balboa Park. Fine in light rain if you don't mind getting damp.
Pull it up on your phone while the sky's still deciding, and tick off what appeals. With a group, you only have to argue about the shortlist, not the forecast.
