Check which kind of salmon you bought before you pick, because the two behave differently: cold-smoked is dry-cured and not technically cooked, with a silky texture, while hot-smoked is fully cooked and flaky, as Food & Wine explains. Most of its recipes use cold-smoked, with a few hot-smoked uses. Salads, pastas, a tart and a chowder are all here. The list assumes smoked salmon you've bought, and it leaves out smoking your own.
Why these items are on the list
- Creamy smoked salmon pasta. Creamy garlic sauce and ribbons of salmon. Cooked and Loved says it's ready in 30 minutes, crediting The Endless Meal.
- Lemony spring pasta with vegetables. Lemon zest, grated parmesan and a touch of sour cream finish it.
- Farfalle with vodka cream sauce. Melt-in-your-mouth strips add smoke to a creamy pasta alla vodka.
- Mixed greens salad with goat cheese. Acme says it's ready in about 15 minutes, with the salmon as the protein.
- Salad with soft eggs and avocado. Honey mustard dressing makes it light but filling.
- Hot-smoked salmon salad, dill sauce. This one wants hot-smoked salmon, with crisp greens, a creamy dill sauce and Dijon dressing.
- Shuba salad with salmon. A layered Russian salad of beets, potatoes, carrots and eggs. Hearty and creamy.
- Gravlax plate with mustard dressing. Dill-seasoned cured salmon with a lightly spiced mustard dressing and a mixed green salad.
- Potato rösti with capers and onion. Crisp outside, soft inside. Ribbons of salmon go on top.
- Smoked salmon and leek quiche. Salmon, leeks and cheese. It's good served warm or cold.
- Potato, dill and salmon tart. Potatoes form the crispy base, with a creamy filling on top.
- Smoked salmon chowder. Potatoes, white wine and cream. Cooked and Loved says it tastes even better the next day.
- Waffles with salmon and fried eggs. Crispy waffles under a sunny-side-up egg. Works as breakfast for dinner.
- Cold-smoked salmon tacos. Sockeye is the cold-smoked pick here, but other cold-smoked types work. You only need to warm the corn tortillas.
- Smoked salmon galette. Fine for brunch, lunch or dinner. Acme suggests a dry sparkling rosé for a summer dinner.
- Open-face salmon smørrebrød on rye. Horseradish-crème sauce and a fennel-apple salad finish it.
- Cold pasta salad with dill. Cool and creamy with lemon and capers. A good make-ahead or picnic option.
Tick off what you've made and see which ones you'd repeat. It beats trying to remember them on a Tuesday night, standing in the fish aisle.
