Book ahead for Martinstag goose menus on 11 November. The German list behind this one says many restaurants run specials around the day, so reserving early pays off. The same list puts the Leonids peak around 17 and 18 November, Beaujolais on the third Thursday, and Cologne's carnival kickoff at 11:11. It mixes events, mostly in Germany, with a few trip ideas from a parents' forum thread. Dates come from the sources, so check them before you commit. Yes, even the goose.
Why these items are on the list
- Watch the Leonid meteor shower. German list: peak around 17 and 18 November, up to 15 an hour. Go late, away from streetlights.
- Eat Martinsgans. Roast goose with red cabbage and dumplings, traditionally on 11 November, says the German list. Reserve ahead.
- Taste Beaujolais nouveau. The German list says it's released the third Thursday of November, with tastings at wine shops and bistros.
- Chase northern lights in Tromsø. German list adds orca and humpback whale safaris, pricier. A forum reply calls Norway cold, wet and dark.
- Watch wild geese on the Lower Rhine. German list: up to 180,000 arctic geese winter here. Go at dawn or dusk, near Kleve or Xanten.
- Ride up the Zugspitze. German list: cable car to almost 3,000 metres; often snowy by November, views even without skiing.
- See Cologne's carnival kickoff. German list: it starts at 11:11 on 11 November at the Heumarkt. Wear a costume, warm layers.
- Visit InterWhisky in Wiesbaden. German list calls it Germany's oldest whisky fair, with over 80 exhibitors, tastings and masterclasses.
- Take a night walk. Bring a torch or headlamp. German list: guided Black Forest and Saxon Switzerland tours are often free or cheap.
- Go to Hamburg's Winterdom. German list: runs from 7 November into early December, free entry, Friday night fireworks.
- Try a foggy photo walk. Set yourself a challenge: black and white only, reflections only, or one colour.
- Book a solo date. A restaurant you've been meaning to try, or a film nobody else wants to see.
- Visit Tollwood Winter Festival. German list says it starts 25 November in Munich, with organic street food, crafts and live shows.
- Book a floating session. Per the German list, a session usually runs 60 minutes and costs roughly 50 to 70 euros.
- Eat white truffles in Alba. The German list says November is truffle season, with a fair drawing visitors every weekend.
- Take teens to New York. Forum posters rate it for teens. One says crisp and dry, others warn of cold and cost.
- Look at South Africa. One forum poster says November weather is perfect; another mentions flights at about 600 pounds each.
- Try Sicily or Pompeii. One poster says southern Europe is still T-shirt weather in November, with fewer crowds.
Tick items on your phone as dates get settled, and keep the booked ones separate from the maybes. Then share the list with whoever you're going with.
