A Kansas guidebook points to Grinter Sunflower Farms, the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Historic Site and Strataca as a few stand-outs. It covers more than 100 destinations in all, so think of this as a starter pile, not the whole Sunflower State. The rest of the ideas come from a Lawrence family's summer list and a few outdoor tips. Costs, directions and opening times are left out, so check those before you go. The guide says Kansas just begs to be explored. Fair enough.
Why these items are on the list
- Wander Grinter Sunflower Farms. Listed under stunning views, so this one is for the camera.
- Visit Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop. Stagecoach stop, farm and historic site in one name. Check what's open first.
- Go see Strataca. Described as fascinating. Check hours before you drive out.
- Ride the Midland Railway. In Baldwin City. Something fun is always going on, a Lawrence column said.
- Splash in the Chi Omega fountain. Check it's allowed first, then wait for warm weather. One kid kept asking to swim there.
- Canoe at Shawnee Mission Park. A Lawrence mom and son paddled here one summer.
- Bonfire at Clinton Lake. One hiking spot there has designated fire rings. Check the fire-ring rules, then bring s'mores.
- Picnic at a city band concert. South Park in Lawrence. Order a pizza or two to share and it's a dinner party.
- Travel the tallgrass prairie and historical sites. The guide's blurb mentions the tallgrass prairie and historical sites in the same breath.
- Hike around Clinton Lake. One Lawrence family hikes here often. In winter, layer up and try a local trail.
- Take a nature photography walk. Even a short walk counts, and a phone camera is enough.
- Make sun prints. The Lawrence family spotted sun printing paper at a shop and wanted to try it.
- Sail a fleet of toy boats. The columnist blames Pinterest for this one: tiny stick boats are just so cute.
- Keep your list reasonably short. Ten felt right for one Lawrence family. Mix big trips with small outings.
Keep it on your phone and tick things off as you pass through, or let whoever's riding along pick the next one. Nobody's grading you on the count, so cutting it down is fair.
When to use it
Use it when you've got a free weekend and want a plan, or at the start of a season to pick a few.
