This list is for anyone cleaning a home bathroom, whether you share it with a family or have it to yourself. White Glove Cleaner, quoting the American Cleaning Institute, says more than half of Americans name cleaning the tub and toilet as the most dreaded cleaning tasks. Curbly says to work from top to bottom so cleaned areas stay clean. The list follows that order and finishes with the floor. It leaves out commercial restrooms and professional services. Follow each cleaner's label for safe use.
Why these items are on the list
- Gather supplies and gloves. Curbly lists a toilet brush, mop, scrub pads, microfiber cloths, cleaner, glass cleaner and rubber gloves.
- Clear shower products and counters. White Glove Cleaner: wipe products down to prevent mold or bacteria buildup.
- Dust ceiling, vents, fans, lights. Curbly starts at the top. SweetProcess uses a vacuum attachment or cloth on vents and fans.
- Spray shower and tub. SweetProcess says let it sit 10 minutes. White Glove Cleaner says a few minutes.
- Scrub tiles, grout and drain. SweetProcess: remove soap scum, mildew and stains, then rinse and dry.
- Soak showerhead in vinegar. White Glove Cleaner: a plastic bag of white vinegar overnight, then rinse with warm water.
- Clean shower door glass. White Glove Cleaner recommends glass cleaner.
- Spray toilet bowl, close lid. White Glove Cleaner: let it sit while you clean the outside. SweetProcess says 10 minutes.
- Scrub bowl, flush, rinse brush. SweetProcess says to scrub the bowl, then flush and rinse the brush.
- Wipe toilet seat, lid, tank, base. SweetProcess: disinfect them and reach behind and under the toilet.
- Wash toothbrush holder. White Glove Cites a 2011 NSF study: over a quarter were contaminated with Coliform bacteria.
- Clean mirror, dry with soft cloth. White Glove Cleaner: drying with a soft cloth prevents streaks.
- Clean sink and counters. White Glove Cleaner: a wipe every couple of days prevents buildup after the first clean.
- Steam-loosen stuck counter grime. White Glove Cleaner: spray, run hot shower 5 minutes, wait 20, then wipe.
- Wipe walls. White Glove Cleaner says walls should be wiped at least once a month.
- Declutter cabinets, check dates. SweetProcess says to sort by category and expiration date and throw out expired products.
- Check for leaks and mold. SweetProcess: check fixtures for leaks, cracks or mildew, then fix or call a professional.
- Wash mats and hand towels. White Glove Cleaner suggests doing it while the floor is cleared.
- Empty and clean trash bin. SweetProcess says to rinse, disinfect and dry the bin.
- Sweep, then mop last. White Glove Cleaner: this collects the dirt and hair dusted off earlier.
- Let floor dry, replace mats. White Glove Cleaner says to let it dry on its own before putting things back.
- Store supplies out of reach. SweetProcess cautions that children and pets must not reach cleaning supplies.
- Wash hands with soap. SweetProcess ends its list with thorough hand washing after disposing of gloves.
Bathroom checklists tend to be printable PDFs behind an email signup or vendor pages written for janitorial staff. A tickable list keeps one working order, lets you skip the monthly tasks on a quick clean, and can be shared so each person in the house takes their own rows.
When to use it
Use it for a weekly or monthly bathroom clean, or before guests arrive. The showerhead soak runs overnight, so start it the evening before.
