We used to say we never store your list contents. Since list sharing shipped, that's no longer fully true: lists you keep to yourself stay on your device, but a list you share has to live on our servers so your collaborators can see it. We still don't sell data, and we still don't do targeted advertising — that would frankly destroy the kind of pristine experience Clear is beloved for.
If you never share a list, its contents never leave your device. Rewards and achievements are tracked on-device too. This is the original Clear promise and it still holds — for contents. Usage identifiers still reach our analytics (see below).
To make sharing work (that's our contract with you, in GDPR terms): a random user ID for your account; your email address if you sign in with Apple; and the full contents of any list you share — title and every item — stored in Google Firebase. You can also use sharing completely anonymously, with no email at all. To improve Clear (our legitimate interest): usage metrics like how many people pull to go back, described under Analytics.
When you join a shared list, the other members can see your email address (if you signed in with one), what you add, edit, and complete, and a short activity feed of recent changes — the feed itself is kept for about two days. A record of who removed whom from a list is kept for as long as the list exists. Task text also travels inside push notifications, delivered through Apple and Google. And here's the honest part: if you leave a shared list or delete your account, the items you wrote and the membership history stay in that list for the people still using it. We can't reach into someone else's list and unwrite your groceries.
An invite link is a key: anyone who has it can see the full list — before signing in or joining — and links don't expire unless the owner revokes them, which stops new joins. The list's title can appear in the link itself, and we render a small preview image of the list (cached on Cloudflare's network, so it can briefly show an older version). On iOS, the app checks your clipboard once, on first launch only, to carry an invite you tapped through the App Store — you'll see Apple's "Allow Paste?" prompt when it happens.
The app sends usage events to PostHog with personal and pseudonymous identifiers: your user ID, your email if you're signed in, and which lists (by random ID) you share or join — never your list contents, and never the invite links themselves. This website uses Google Analytics with cookies. No ads, no selling data, ever. We just want to deliver the best listing experience and be rewarded with some patronage in the in-app shop.
Google Firebase (shared list storage and sign-in), Apple and Google (push notifications, sign-in), Cloudflare (preview images), PostHog (app analytics), and Google Analytics (this website). Processing happens in the United States. Each of these providers is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (including its UK and Swiss extensions), with standard contractual clauses as a fallback.
Clear is made by Impending, Inc. (Phill Ryu 437087, #146, 5348 Vegas Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89108), the data controller. You can ask us for a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, take it with you, or complain to your local supervisory authority. Deleting your account removes your account data, with the shared-list caveat above. Write to us at [email protected] and a human will answer.
