Start with the bag you'll keep within reach. Condé Nast Traveler suggests a roomy tote that slides under the seat, with a zipper and interior pockets for your phone and passport. Where's Jessie B. packs compression socks for flights over 3 hours. Her adapters are for international trips only. This list sticks to small gear and accessories that travel with you, from in-flight items to power and toiletries. Pack what each leg of the trip actually needs.
Why these items are on the list
- Zippered carry-on tote. Under-seat space is tight. A pliable, roomy tote holds in-flight essentials without taking up all your foot room.
- In-flight pouch. Keep it in the seat-back pocket so you're not digging through your bag mid-flight.
- Compression socks. Where's Jessie B. packs them for flights over 3 hours and says light compression is all most people need.
- Earbuds or headphones. AirPods Pro are pocket-sized and more portable than over-ear headphones, with strong noise cancellation.
- Sleep mask. Hotels have random little lights and planes have naps. One mask covers both.
- Power bank. Your phone is boarding pass, map and camera. Pack a lightweight charger.
- Travel tech organizer. Keeps all your cords and chargers in one easy-to-find spot.
- Plug adapters, international only. Skip them at home. Abroad, pack just the one or two you'll need.
- Reusable travel bottles. Leakproof refillables replace plastic minis; Where's Jessie B. prefers a 1.7 ounce GoToob for shampoo and conditioner.
- Toiletry bag. Go compact for short trips. A hanging one keeps hotel counters clear on longer stays.
- Packing cubes. Condé Nast Traveler's editor puts bulky items like jeans in large cubes, socks and tees in small ones.
- Water bottle. Where's Jessie B. says to use whatever bottle you already own.
- Passport with cover. Spills and tears can damage it; the U.S. State Department says a badly damaged passport can be rejected.
- Slim zippered wallet. Small, with a zip so coins and cards stay put.
- Pill case. Carry only what the trip needs, one compartment per day, not the whole bottle.
- Jewelry case for carry-on. Condé Nast Traveler's rule: never check valuables. Keep jewelry in your carry-on or personal item.
- Bluetooth luggage tracker. Helps you find a suitcase that goes astray; One Small Bag says Chipolo works with Android and Apple.
- Instant coffee or tea. For 5am departures, jet-lagged mornings and hotels with no lobby coffee.
- Reusable earplugs. One Small Bag says its Loop Quiet 2 earplugs work much better than wax plugs.
- Hand sanitizer. On travel days, keep it in your carry-on, within easy reach.
Tick it on your phone as you fill the bag. Whatever stays unticked is still left to pack.
When to use it
Use it while you're packing, before the bag gets zipped shut.
