Names are the easy thing to miss. Konecta's guide says first and last names must match exactly across every document you bring, and any difference may cause delays or a rejected application. The rest is paperwork you can gather in advance. The MVC says a well-prepared customer should finish in about 45 minutes, and its spokesman asks you to arrive 15 minutes early. This list covers a first-time New Jersey REAL ID, plus the transfer, fee and card-delivery steps around it.

Why these items are on the list

  1. Open the MVC document selector. At nj.gov/mvc/realid. It walks through the requirements and double-checks what you have.
  2. Original proof of identity. Bring originals, such as a valid passport or birth certificate.
  3. Identity documents totaling six points. The MVC counts identity documents in points and needs them to add up to six.
  4. Social Security number proof. The MVC verifies it with the Social Security Administration. An official letter is also listed.
  5. Two proofs of NJ residency. A utility bill, lease agreement or bank statements are all examples.
  6. Proof of legal status. A document confirming your legal status in the United States is on the list.
  7. Check names match exactly. Konecta says first and last names must match exactly on every document. Any difference may cause delays or rejection.
  8. Book an MVC appointment. Appointment only, at authorized NJMVC offices. The order is documents first, then schedule.
  9. Arrive 15 minutes early. MVC spokesman William Connolly's advice. The MVC says a well-prepared customer should take about 45 minutes.
  10. Cancel appointments you won't keep. No-shows clog the system. Cancel or reschedule so someone else gets the slot.
  11. Try a Tuesday or Thursday. MVC spokesman William Connolly says licensing centers hold dedicated REAL ID Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  12. Ask about emergency issuance. For urgent travel within the next two weeks, the MVC runs a special program.
  13. Bring payment for the fee. REAL ID costs extra on top of the regular license fee, and the amount varies.
  14. Expect a temporary license. You get one at the appointment while the permanent card is mailed.
  15. Wait for the mailed card. Konecta says that in most cases the document is mailed within 7 to 14 business days.
  16. Look for the star. A star at the top of the card marks it as a REAL ID.
  17. Check if you need one. A valid passport also gets you onto a domestic flight, so a REAL ID isn't always required.
  18. Moving from another state. Apply as a license transfer and meet all New Jersey requirements.

Tick each document as you find it, so you see what's missing before you book. Share the list with a partner or parent applying too.

When to use it

Before you book an MVC appointment, and again the night before you go.
