If the Paul Blart pair is the one you want, start early. CafeMom says it takes planning to find the right pieces, and the mall cop has to start growing a mustache. A few others are lighter: Filter and no filter needs a matching outfit and one partner willing to look rumpled, tired or disheveled, and Tinder match is a cardboard DIY. Each pair here comes with a note on the effort it takes, and group costumes are left out.
Why these items are on the list
- Filter and no filter. Needs a matching outfit, plus one partner willing to look rumpled, tired or disheveled.
- Friday Night and Saturday Morning. Mostly matching outfits and a shared sense of humor; carry the shoes and add grass to the torn dress.
- Our Get Along Shirt. CafeMom puts it at about $5; you do need to get along all night.
- Tinder match. An easy cardboard DIY, a nod to meeting on an app.
- Salt-N-Pepa duo costume. An easy one: one person wears all white with an S, the other all black with a P.
- Cruella and Estella. Can be made from items already in your closet.
- Netflix and Chill. One dresses as the Netflix logo, the other as cozy or an ice bucket.
- Taco Bell(e). A literal taco plus Belle from Beauty and the Beast; it may stump friends at first.
- Georgie and Pennywise. Suggested for couples who like creepy costumes, from the film It.
- Cat in the Hat and Things. For expecting parents: the baby carries a tag saying Thing 2.
- Steve and Blue. Dress as the two leads of a childhood show; friends can join as Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper.
- Mario and Luigi. Unwritten lists game duos like this among endless options from movies, music and history.
- Bonnie and Clyde. A history-minded pair, also on Unwritten's list of dynamic duos.
- Amazon delivery person and boxes. A way to reuse the delivery boxes that start arriving this time of year.
- Garden and gardener. A DIY idea plant-loving couples likely have the tools for; either partner can be the plant.
- Red Queen and White Rabbit. A 2Peas poster's plan: no-sew tulle skirt, duct tape bodice covered in cards; partner in suit and rabbit ears.
- Doctor and vaccine. Not an easy DIY, but a funny pairing.
- Paul Blart and Segway. Needs planning for the pieces, and a mustache to grow.
- Tourist and Statue of Liberty. Swap in any recognizable destination if a Statue of Liberty look is hard to find; low-pressure for reluctant partners.
- Bob Ross and happy tree. Each costume still makes sense on its own if the pair get separated at the party.
- Dorothy and the Tin Man. A 2Peas member says she and her husband have gone as this pair before.
- Plain and peanut M&M's. One partner plain, one peanut; a 2Peas member calls it always fun, if not cultured.
- Terminator and Sarah Connor. A 2Peas member's pairing: the Terminator and the Terminator 2 mental-hospital Sarah Connor.
- Sheldon and Amy. The Big Bang Theory pair; a 2Peas member's son and daughter-in-law wore it and looked cute.
- Squid and sushi chef. A 2Peas member's couple costume from a previous year.
- Al and Peggy Bundy. A 2Peas member's friend and her boyfriend are going as this pair.
- Sonny and Cher. A 2Peas member's idea: the 5'4 partner as Sonny, the 6'2 partner as Cher; he declined.
- Gilligan and Mary Ann. A 2Peas suggestion; the Professor and Ginger, or Mr. and Mrs. Howell, also came up.
Pass the phone back and forth with your partner and tick the pairs you both like. Where a note mentions effort, like a mustache to grow or a no-sew skirt, cross off the ones you won't take on.
When to use it
Open it before Halloween or a costume party, while there is still time to find or make the pieces.
