Both sources do the same thing: they name the exact thing. A Cayman family listed a wreck snorkel, a taco-truck picnic and a bonfire before a big move. A group of BC beer fans named the regions they keep meaning to drive to. Nobody wrote 'travel more'. This list borrows those activity types, so swap in a spot near you for each one. Where an item names a place, read it as an example and go find your own version.
Why these items are on the list
- Sail a small catamaran. Rent a small one on the beach. The Cayman family's Hobie cat was one of their first outings.
- Kayak somewhere you haven't paddled. A new stretch of water counts. The family paddled at two different spots on the same island.
- Snorkel out to a shipwreck. Check the current isn't too strong first. The family visited more than one wreck.
- Snorkel with turtles. Keep your distance so you don't disturb them. Their daughter calls turtles 'boring', but she's teasing.
- Explore tide pools. Look behind rock ledges and in big beach pools. Swimming out of one led to more marine life.
- Try wakeboarding. It was a big item on their list, and two people taught them. Borrow a patient teacher.
- Boat through the mangroves. Take friends along. Snorkelling among the mangrove roots is the sequel they're still saving.
- Snorkel a bioluminescent bay at night. They described it as like flying through fairy dust. Worth a look if one is within reach.
- Picnic on a quiet beach. Tacos from a truck, shade, then a walk along the cliff-top path.
- Stargaze until you spot the ISS. The family saw the International Space Station go over.
- Hike in the Kootenays. The Beer Brothers' two favourite things are hiking mountains and great beer. Another fan wants the West trail.
- Light a beach bonfire. Sausages, marshmallows and, at New Year, fireworks. Their best one came right after lockdown.
- Tour a local farm. They bought plenty of local produce straight from the grower during lockdown.
- Drive the Vancouver Island coast north. One ale-trail fan has been to Victoria many times but never driven up the coast.
- Ride the ferry to Prince Rupert. Then drive across to Valemount, stopping at the breweries along the way.
- Explore the Sunshine Coast. Two people in the group picked it. One pairs it with camping and foraging.
- Base yourself in Summerland. It splits the distance between Kelowna and Penticton. Do one brewery a day.
- Revisit your own neighbourhood properly. One writer's top wish was to stay local and re-explore her own area, breweries included.
Tick off what you've done and the rest becomes a short menu for the next free weekend. Pass it around the group chat and let everyone argue over what to pick next.
When to use it
Whenever you want a few weekend or summer plans to choose from, or before a big move or trip.
